Melody in the basement of Henri Verneuil 1962
Melody''underground''is a film by Henri Verneuil, released in 1962. This is a great movie that can be between film noir and comedy. The two main stars who will share the bill are none other than Jean Gabin and Alain Delon. There are also a small role as bartender Jean Carmet. This is the first time I saw this movie, and I must say that I was not too displeased. This is a great classic of French cinema, but it's not a masterpiece, far from it! However the film's story is very well written and dialogues Michel Audiard collide with each replica.
Jean Gabin plays the role of a certain Mr. Charles, out of jail after many years locked behind bars. Once back home, his wife asked him to resume a quiet little business on the Cote d'Azur, but Charles is a new blow: rob the casino in Cannes ... Knocking on doors of his old friends too gangsters, they assume the case is''too old''judging for this kind of crap. So it goes back in touch with an ex-con he met in prison. This guy called Francis Verlot, it is played by Alain Delon. They will also ask both step-brother Francis to come and lend a hand, as a driver. All three parties on the Croisette, they will mount a wonderfully clever plan. But will they achieve their ultimate dream ... ie pocket the one billion francs? See for yourself with this movie!
Basically, as in all their films, Delon and Gabin deliver a remarkable performance. And Henri Verneuil is still as good director. A movie to watch for fans of French cinema in black and white fans Audiard, and the whole clique that time ...
