Qutb Minar

The Qutb Minar minaret (tower of victory) measuring approximately 72.5 meters in height and consists of 5 parts. The first are red sandstone and white marble in the last two. A staircase of 399 stairs provides access to the summit (unfortunately banned following several suicides). Its construction began in 1193 under the reign of the first Muslim ruler of Delhi. It was completed in 1368. It is the highest stone tower in India and the third in the Muslim world. This monument (as well as the surrounding site) is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. It is believed to be a minaret for the mosque nearby, a tour commemorating the victory of Muslim power in India, or simply a military observation tower.
I took my last day in Delhi to visit. It is not central but well south of the capital. So I borrowed a "tuk-tuk (autorickshaw) to get there. I feared a little traffic (it was a Sunday) but the site is large enough and fast access.
The minaret is of course the major component of the complex but we also see, right next to the mosque Quwwat ul-Islam, the first built in India at the site of Hindu and Jain temples. Indeed, it has used in its construction of carved stones from the temples, which gives a mixture of Indian and Islamic styles. This will see images of Shiva on the bas-reliefs.

In the central courtyard of the mosque is the Iron Pillar of Delhi, a curious pylons dating from the fourth century and erected in honor of Vishnu. Height of about 7 meters and up to 98% iron it has withstood corrosion for over 1,600 years. Previously people could wrap their arms was the getting, it seems, the realization of their wishes. An exercise that is no longer possible today, for the protection of the column. the west of the mosque is the tomb of Iltutmish noted, built in 1235. And nearby is the basis of another minaret, the Alai Minar. This imposing structure with a diameter was, it seems, be taller than the Qutb Minar. However its construction (by initée Alaudin) had to be stopped at the height of about 15 meters, lack of resources. There remains only the central portion of the base, without his face. to the park is very nice. It is a must for all who pass through Delhi. The minaret is impressive and the architecture that surrounds it very interesting. So to see without fail.
