Bukavu city has boomed in years 30 and 40 and this period corresponds precisely to develop a new style of architecture 
internationally. This trend, often called "Streamline Moderne" is sort of the last manifestation of the style Art Deco architecture. Its main features include the use shaped curves, horizontal lines and sometimes elongated elements nautical connotation, such as windows and railings tube. Mention that he also enjoyed a certain popularity in the design of household appliances (such as radios, vacuum cleaners and sewing machines), vehicles (the famous Airstream trailer) and in the interior. 
This style reached its apogee at the Paris Exposition in 1937. The flag of Belgium in particular was part of this trend. It was designed by architect Henry Van de Velde, a pioneer of Art Nouveau in Brussels. It was a low building of simple geometric shape and flat surfaces. The horizontal lines of windows, and central projection of the building in a semicircle with a long canopy accentuated character "streamline" the building. The reactions of architecture critics, however, were mixed. 
This pavilion could serve as an inspiration to many buildings in Belgium and its colonies in Africa (Congo and Rwanda-Urundi). Can still be seen in Bukavu (and also

Some stylistic aspects recall a little Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, with its architecture "futurist" of Italian origin. Unfortunately, many buildings have been modified over the years and their character strongly altered. Down here a brick wall almost completely mask the facade of one of them. 
Some have had no maintenance and are in very bad condition. As one, a strange semi-circular building which has apparently acted as an hotel during the colonial era. I'd be curious to go inside ... 
And many others have simply been demolished or abandoned. You can still see a few "survivors" of this beautiful time. Admire eg multiple windows and volume of this interesting building.
